Jajpur Family Shocked as 23 Cobra Hatchlings Found Beneath Bedroom Floor

Key Points

As many as 23 cobra hatchlings were rescued from a bedroom in Chandakuda village in Jajpur district after a resident spotted a small snake raising its hood inside his room.
Jajpur, Jun 23: In a startling incident, as many as 23 cobra hatchlings were rescued from a bedroom in Chandakuda village under Jayantara panchayat of Dasarathapur block in Odisha’s Jajpur district.

According to a source, resident Gouranga Jena spotted a small snake moving inside his bedroom and attempted to drive it away. However, despite its size, the snake raised its hood and tried to strike, leaving family members alarmed.

The family immediately informed Snake Helpline State Coordinator Pramod Sahu, who, along with volunteer Jahangir Khan, reached the spot and launched a search operation.

Floor Dug Up During Rescue Operation
During the rescue, the team dismantled portions of the mud-floor house and conducted an extensive search. They recovered 23 cobra hatchlings from beneath the floor. Several broken snake eggshells were also found at the site, indicating that the hatchlings had recently emerged.

The rescued snakes were safely collected and later released into a suitable natural habitat away from human settlements.

Monsoon Season Favourable for Snake Hatchlings
Pramod Sahu said the current period is a favourable season for cobra eggs to hatch, increasing the likelihood of encounters with young snakes in residential areas.

He cautioned that although hatchlings are small in size, they are venomous and their bites can be life-threatening.

Residents Advised to Remain Vigilant
The Snake Helpline has advised people to remain cautious during the monsoon season, use mosquito nets while sleeping, and keep their homes and surrounding areas clean to minimise the risk of snakes taking shelter nearby.

The rescue operation drew attention from locals, many of whom gathered at the spot to witness the rare recovery of such a large number of cobra hatchlings from a residential house.
