Pipili, Jun 9: A cobra, along with several snake eggs, was rescued on Tuesday from a stone pile at Arjunsinghpur village under Satasankha area of Pipili in Odisha's Puri district, drawing the attention of local residents and wildlife rescuers.
According to a source, the rescue operation was carried out from the premises of Narahari Biswal's house after labourers spotted the reptile while removing a pile of stones that had remained undisturbed for nearly a decade.
Cobra, Eggs Discovered During Stone Removal
The workers engaged in clearing the stone heap noticed a snake and a cluster of eggs hidden underneath. They immediately informed the house owner, who contacted members of Snake Helpline for assistance, the source added.
Snake Helpline member Sushanta Kumar Behera reached the spot and safely rescued the cobra along with the eggs.
Several Eggs Found At Site
During the rescue, a total of 16 unhatched cobra eggs were recovered. In addition, rescuers found 14 hatched eggshells, indicating that several hatchlings had already emerged from the nest.
Rescuers said the hatched eggs were believed to be from an earlier breeding cycle, while the remaining eggs were close to hatching.
Released Into Natural Habitat
As villagers expressed concern over the presence of the snake and eggs near residential areas, the rescued cobra and eggs were shifted and released in a suitable natural habitat.
Snake Helpline officials said the relocation was carried out to ensure both public safety and the protection of the reptiles.

Warning As Hatching Season Begins
Snake Helpline General Secretary Suvendu Mallik said the hatching season for cobra eggs has begun and sightings of young snakes are likely to increase in the coming weeks.
He advised residents to keep their courtyards, gardens and vacant spaces clean, as snakes often lay eggs in undisturbed areas covered with stones, debris, vegetation or other materials.
According to rescuers, maintaining clean surroundings and avoiding unnecessary disturbance of snakes can help prevent human-snake conflict during the breeding and hatching season.
