Malkangiri, Mar 2: In a major breakthrough against wildlife
trafficking, forest officials in Odisha’s Malkangiri district rescued 213 live
Indian flap shell turtles during an anti-smuggling operation, officials said on
Monday.
The turtles, valued at nearly Rs 4 lakh, were being illegally transported in a
Bolero SUV packed with ten gunny bags near MV-48 village under Undurukonda
forest beat in Kalimela range.
Swift Action by Forest Department
Acting on a tip-off, a team led by forest guard Ali Mohammad Khan intercepted the vehicle. On spotting the officials, the driver and traders fled the scene, abandoning the SUV and the turtles. The vehicle was seized and the turtles were taken to the Kalimela forest office for safe custody.

✨According to Assistant Conservator of Forests, Mansun
Khemudu, the rescued turtles will undergo veterinary examination before being
released into freshwater habitats. This ensures their safe rehabilitation and
protection from further trafficking attempts.
