Bhubaneswar, Jun 22: The School & Mass Education Department on Monday announced that ten schools from Odisha have been selected for National Awards and Recognitions under the Swachh Evam Harit Vidyalaya Rating (SHVR) 2025–26, a pioneering initiative promoting safe, sustainable, and child-friendly learning environments.

Framework for Green Schools

The SHVR framework evaluates schools on sanitation and hygiene, safe drinking water, greenery and biodiversity, waste management, and climate-resilient practices. The initiative encourages institutions to adopt environmentally responsible measures while safeguarding student well-being.

Odisha’s Achievement

Out of 20 schools nominated from Odisha for national-level evaluation, ten have been selected for awards. This recognition highlights the collective efforts of teachers, students, school management committees, and local communities in integrating sustainable practices into daily school functioning. Odisha has thus emerged as a leading state in advancing environmental stewardship in education.

National Context

At the national level, 191 schools from 29 States and Union Territories have been chosen for awards under SHVR 2025–26. Each award-winning school will receive a cash prize of ₹1 lakh, a certificate of recognition, and the opportunity to participate in a three-day exposure visit to another state to share and learn best practices.

Officials emphasized that the recognition reflects Odisha’s commitment to strengthening WASH facilities, fostering eco-friendly campuses, and preparing climate-resilient learning spaces. The initiative is expected to inspire more schools to adopt sustainable models, ensuring healthier and greener environments for students.
