Train Tickets To Now Cost More As Railways Unveils New Fare Structure
Journeys under 215 km in Ordinary Class will remain unaffected.

Key Points

  • Journeys under 215 km in Ordinary Class will remain unaffected by the new fare structure.
  • Passengers will pay 1 paise per km in Ordinary Class and 2 paise per km in Mail/Express NonAC and AC classes, with a 500 km NonAC trip costing Rs 10 more.
  • The Railways expects to gain Rs 600 crore annually, citing the need to modernize infrastructure and meet rising operational costs.

New Delhi, Dec 21: The Indian Railways has unveiled a revised fare structure that will come into effect from December 26, 2025, aimed at boosting revenue while keeping shortdistance travel affordable.

Under the new system, no fare increase will apply to journeys under 215 km in Ordinary Class. However, for longer journeys, passengers will see a marginal hike: 1 paise per km in Ordinary Class and 2 paise per km in Mail/Express NonAC and AC classes.

Railway officials estimate that the fare adjustment will generate an additional Rs 600 crore in annual revenue. For example, passengers traveling 500 km in NonAC class will pay an extra Rs 10 compared to current fares.

Authorities emphasised that the revision is modest and designed to balance affordability with the need for financial sustainability.

The announcement has drawn mixed reactions from commuters. While many welcomed the decision to keep shortdistance fares unchanged, others expressed concern about the cumulative impact of fare hikes on longdistance travel.

Officials assured that the fare revision will be implemented transparently and urged passengers to check updated fare charts before booking tickets. The move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the Railways’ financial health while continuing to expand services across the country.
