TRAI Plans One-Password Public Wi-Fi System, Transforming India’s Digital Access
Nationwide Public Wi-Fi Access with Single Login

Key Points

India’s public Wi-Fi experience is set for a major upgrade as TRAI proposes a one-password system under PM-WANI, enabling seamless access across 4 lakh hotspots with enhanced security and revenue models.
New Delhi, May 7: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is preparing to revolutionize the way citizens access public Wi-Fi. Under the PM-WANI scheme, TRAI has proposed a new system that will allow users to connect to over 4 lakh public Wi-Fi hotspots across the country using just one password or OTP, eliminating the hassle of repeated logins and registrations.

Currently, users face multiple challenges while accessing public Wi-Fi at railway stations, libraries, malls, or parks, including frequent OTP verifications and unstable connections. The new system aims to simplify this process, offering seamless connectivity nationwide once a user logs in for the first time.

To ensure safety in digital transactions, the system will incorporate
WPA3 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 3), the latest global security standard. This will safeguard UPI payments and online banking, making public Wi-Fi not only convenient but also secure.

TRAI’s consultation paper highlights that the earlier PM-WANI model struggled due to limited revenue opportunities for operators. The new framework introduces three revenue streams: free internet supported by small advertisements, premium subscriptions for high-speed data, and government-backed financial assistance. This balanced approach is expected to encourage operators to expand services while keeping costs affordable for users.

The initiative also envisions differentiated models for urban and rural areas. Cities will benefit from high-speed internet, while villages will see community Wi-Fi hubs, bridging the digital divide and supporting inclusive growth.

Despite India’s vast population of 140 crore, only 2% currently use public Wi-Fi, compared to 80% in South Korea and 70% in the United States. Former BSNL Chairman Arun Srivastava noted that this step will not only make internet access cheaper but also reduce the growing burden on mobile networks.

The Gujarat outreach of PM-WANI has already demonstrated strong investor interest, and TRAI’s latest proposal is expected to accelerate adoption nationwide. With simplified access, enhanced security, and sustainable revenue models, India’s digital ecosystem is poised for a significant transformation.

This move aligns with the government’s broader vision of expanding digital infrastructure, ensuring that public Wi-Fi becomes a reliable, secure, and widely accessible service for millions of citizens.
