New Delhi, June 9: In a significant step towards advancing the
internationalisation agenda of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the
Ministry of Education has issued Letters of Approval (LoAs) to three globally
reputed foreign universities — the University of Bristol, the University of
York and the University of New South Wales — to set up campuses in India, officials said on Tuesday.
The approvals were handed over by Higher Education Secretary
and UGC Chairman Vineet Joshi in the presence of Education Minister Dharmendra
Pradhan. Senior representatives from the British High Commission, Australian
High Commission, British Council, Ministry of Education, UGC and the three
universities attended the ceremony.
The University of Bristol will establish its Mumbai
Enterprise Campus, offering programmes in immersive arts, finance, data
science, economics, business management, entrepreneurship and innovation. The
University of York will also set up its first overseas campus in Mumbai, with
courses in finance, computer science with artificial intelligence, cyber
security, business, economics, creative industries and management. The
University of New South Wales will open its Bengaluru campus at Manyata
Business Park in August 2026, with programmes in business, computer science and
cyber security, alongside collaborations in renewable energy, health, transport
and education.
Pradhan welcomed the institutions, noting that their
presence in Mumbai and Bengaluru — two of India’s most dynamic knowledge and
innovation hubs — would strengthen quality education, global learning
partnerships and research collaboration. He described Bengaluru as the “new
Silicon Valley of the eastern part of the world.”

The initiative reflects growing confidence among leading
global institutions in India’s regulatory and academic ecosystem. Under UGC’s
streamlined framework, foreign universities are assured autonomy while
maintaining global standards. The campuses are expected to expand access to
international education, promote two‑way academic mobility, strengthen
research and innovation, and deepen India’s
partnerships with the UK and Australia.

In addition, 10 Letters of Intent have
been issued to other institutions from the UK, US, Australia and Italy, while
Deakin University, University of Wollongong and Queen’s University Belfast have
begun operations in GIFT City.
