New Delhi, Mar 18: The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday bid an emotional farewell to 59 retiring members from 20 states, including nine women MPs, marking a significant moment in India’s parliamentary calendar.
Addressing the House, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the departing members for their immense contributions, stating that their role in strengthening parliamentary democracy will always remain “relevant and valuable.” He emphasized that politics never comes to a full stop, and their experience will continue to benefit the nation.PM Modi said this is an occasion that every two years immerses the Members in emotional moments in this House. He said when such an occasion comes, the respect is expressed towards the colleagues who are moving forward for a special purpose.
Calling the Rajya Sabha an “open university,” the Prime Minister said the House provides an opportunity to learn and understand the finer aspects of national life. He also highlighted the contributions of senior leaders like H. D. Deve Gowda, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Sharad Pawar, urging new MPs to learn from their dedication and commitment.
PM Modi also appreciated Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, who is among those retiring, for his balanced conduct in the House.

Earlier, Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan said the biennial retirement of one-third members ensures continuity while allowing fresh perspectives to enrich debates. Leader of Opposition Kharge noted that public life never truly retires, as the spirit of service continues.
Several MPs, including Derek O’Brien and Sanjay Singh, reflected on their experiences and called for longer parliamentary sessions and improved attendance to enhance effectiveness.
The farewell session concluded on an emotional note, with members across party lines expressing unity and shared commitment to public service. The House was later adjourned till Monday, 11 AM.
