Shimla, Mar 24: A media delegation from Odisha, led by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), visited the ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute to understand ongoing research and innovations in potato cultivation.

CPRI Highlights Research and National Role

Welcoming the delegation, Director Dr Brajesh Singh described the institute as a national hub for potato research.

He said the crop, introduced to India nearly 400 years ago, has become a key component of the country’s food and nutritional security.

Established in 1949 and shifted to Shimla in 1956, the institute functions under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and operates six regional stations across different agro-climatic zones.

The institute has developed over 70 improved potato varieties and plays a key role in quality seed production. India currently ranks second globally in potato production, he added.
