New Delhi, Apr 22: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Government of India, has announced a major update for vehicle owners and transport departments. The VAHAN portal will now feature a new Vehicle Classification Framework designed to make vehicle data more transparent and compliant with regulations.
According to the official notification, vehicles will be categorized based on key compliance parameters such as registration validity, fitness certificate, insurance, and Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC). The framework introduces four main categories:
Active Compliant: Vehicles with all valid documents.
Active Non-Compliant: Vehicles currently in use but missing one or more mandatory documents.
Temporary Archive: Vehicles temporarily stored in the database.
Permanent Archive: Vehicles whose Registration Certificate (RC) has been cancelled or marked for scrapping.
Purpose and Functionality
The primary aim of this initiative is to strengthen the national vehicle database and provide accurate statistics on the number of vehicles actively running on Indian roads. It will also simplify the process for owners who wish to restore compliance and reactivate their vehicles.
The National Informatics Centre (NIC) has been directed to implement the necessary technical changes. Additionally, all state transport commissioners have been instructed to alert fitness centers and PUCC centers to ensure smooth enforcement of the new framework.
