N. Rangasamy was sworn in as Puducherry Chief Minister for a record fifth term, pledging to focus on development and welfare under the AINRC‑led NDA government.
New Delhi, May 13: Veteran leader N. Rangasamy has been sworn in as the Chief Minister of Puducherry for a record fifth term, marking another milestone in his political career that spans more than two decades. The swearing‑in ceremony took place on Wednesday, following the formation of a new government in the union territory.

Speaking after assuming office, Rangasamy expressed his delight at returning as Chief Minister. “It gives me immense joy to have assumed office as the Chief Minister of Puducherry for the fifth time. We will work for the sake of the people and for the development of the state,” he said, adding that his government would implement measures and schemes aimed at accelerating growth and welfare.

His appointment was formally confirmed by President Droupadi Murmu, after which Lieutenant Governor Kailashnathan invited him to form the new government. Other ministers are expected to take their oaths of office shortly, completing the cabinet formation.

Rangasamy, 76, first served as Chief Minister between 2001 and 2006, and again from 2006 to 2008 while in the Congress. After founding the All India NR Congress (AINRC), he returned to power from 2011 to 2016, and later led the AINRC‑BJP alliance government from 2021 to 2026. His latest swearing‑in marks his fifth tenure, underscoring his enduring influence in Puducherry politics.

In the recently concluded Assembly elections, Rangasamy secured victories from both Thattanchavady and Mangalam constituencies, reaffirming his strong political base. The AINRC‑led NDA alliance won a comfortable majority, securing 18 seats in the 30‑member Assembly, two above the majority mark.

Earlier, Rangasamy met the Lieutenant Governor and staked his claim to form the government, submitting letters of support from elected MLAs. Following the formal acceptance, he was invited to lead the new administration.

Observers see Rangasamy’s return as a continuation of the AINRC‑led NDA’s governance in Puducherry, with expectations that his government will focus on development, welfare schemes, and administrative continuity. His leadership is anticipated to steer the union territory through another term of political stability and growth.
