New Delhi, Dec 16: Four people were killed and around 25 others injured after a massive pile-up involving 10 buses and three cars on the Delhi–Agra Expressway in Uttar Pradesh early Tuesday, a source said.

The crash occurred on the Agra–Noida carriageway of the Yamuna Expressway, Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar said. Dense fog severely reduced visibility, causing multiple vehicles to ram into one another.

All the vehicles caught fire following the collision, trapping passengers inside and triggering panic at the scene, eyewitnesses said.

Fire tenders, police teams and ambulances rushed to the spot. Firefighters doused the flames while rescue teams pulled survivors from the wreckage and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals. Around 25 people were admitted to hospitals in Mathura and neighbouring districts, officials said. Several of the injured remain in critical condition.

Traffic on the affected stretch of the expressway was halted for several hours as emergency crews cleared the debris and damaged vehicles. Authorities have launched an inquiry to ascertain the sequence of events leading to the crash.

The accident occurred as dense fog and smog blanketed large parts of Uttar Pradesh. Visibility dropped sharply across several cities, disrupting early morning travel.

Agra remained shrouded in thick fog, with the Taj Mahal not visible for several hours. Similar conditions were reported from Varanasi, Prayagraj, Mainpuri and Moradabad, where commuters slowed down due to poor visibility.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board, air quality varied across the state, with Agra recording a poor Air Quality Index, while Noida slipped into the severe category. Delhi also reported severe air quality, with toxic smog reducing visibility across the city.
