Union Home Minister Amit Shah saluted nurses on International Nurses Day, praising their selfless service and dedication, and said the nation is proud of their contributions.
New Delhi, May 12: On International Nurses Day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid tribute to nurses across India, describing them as “pillars of hope for the suffering” and the true foundation of a healthy nation. His message, shared on social media platform X, highlighted the selfless service and unwavering dedication of nurses, whose contributions remain vital to healthcare systems worldwide.

“On International Nurses Day, I salute every nurse who stands as a pillar of hope for the suffering. Their selfless sewa and unwavering dedication is the true foundation of a healthy Bharat. The nation is proud of you,” Shah wrote, underscoring the critical role nurses play in patient care and community health.

International Nurses Day is observed annually on May 12 to honour the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing. The day recognises the multifaceted responsibilities nurses shoulder — from patient treatment and emotional support to medical coordination, documentation, and emergency response.

This year’s theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” emphasises the importance of supporting nurses through safer working conditions, fair salaries, leadership opportunities, and access to quality education and training. The campaign, organised globally by the International Council of Nurses, also promotes awareness through educational resources and social media hashtags such as #IND2026 and #OurNursesOurFuture.

The observance comes at a time when healthcare systems worldwide face mounting challenges, including staff shortages, rising patient demand, climate-related emergencies, and conflict situations. Nurses remain at the forefront of these crises, often working under demanding conditions with limited resources, yet continuing to provide essential care.

International Nurses Day has been celebrated since 1965, with the International Council of Nurses officially establishing it in 1974. Today, it is marked in more than 100 countries, with hospitals, clinics, and communities acknowledging the indispensable role nurses play in sustaining healthcare services.

By saluting nurses, Amit Shah joined global leaders and institutions in recognising their contributions. His remarks reflect the growing appreciation for healthcare workers who, despite immense pressures, remain committed to saving lives and strengthening the nation’s health infrastructure.

The day serves as a reminder that empowering nurses is not only a tribute to their dedication but also a crucial step toward building resilient healthcare systems for the future.
