Washington, May 5: Indian American leaders across the United States have welcomed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) victory in West Bengal, describing it as a historic turning point for governance, security, and development in the state.
Eminent physician Dr Bharat Barai called the result “a great victory for the people of West Bengal,” alleging that the previous regime had fostered a “mafia kingdom” that threatened voters with violence and undermined democratic institutions. He claimed that voting processes had been obstructed, but said the people’s mandate had prevailed.
Dr Adapa Prasad, president of the Overseas Friends of BJP (OFBJP-USA), extended “hearty congratulations” to the people of Bengal and Assam, noting BJP’s “phenomenal historic victory” in Bengal and “stupendous victory” in Assam. He highlighted the party’s gains in Puducherry and Kerala, while maintaining its position in Tamil Nadu. Prasad emphasized that Bengal’s win carried broader implications for national security, declaring, “Bengal’s bad days are over.”
Dr Vasudev Patel, general secretary of OFBJP-USA, underscored the strategic importance of Bengal as a frontier state, saying it was vital for the “security and integrity of the nation.” He announced that the organization would hold victory celebrations across the United States.
Cardiologist Dr Indranil Basu-Ray described decades of rule in Bengal as marked by “complete de-industrialization, gross unemployment, increasing poverty, and rampant crime.” He said the BJP’s sweep was the culmination of over 50 years of struggle by patriotic Bengalis to restore the state’s glory. “This historic mandate reflects the people’s trust, aspirations, and desire for strong governance, development, and cultural pride,” he added.
