Bhopal, Nov 19: In a tragic blow to Madhya Pradesh’s elite anti-Maoist unit, Hawk Force, Inspector Ashish Sharma, one of its most decorated and courageous officers, was killed in a fierce early morning encounter with Maoists on Wednesday.
The gunfight took place in the dense forests near the Madhya Pradesh–Chhattisgarh–Maharashtra trijunction, a region known for heightened Maoist activity.
According to reports, a joint operation was launched based on specific intelligence inputs about Maoist presence in the area. Around 8:30 AM, Sharma and his team, along with personnel from Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra police, engaged in a heavy exchange of fire with armed Maoist cadres.
During the operation, Inspector Sharma sustained grievous bullet injuries to his thigh and abdomen while leading from the front. Despite efforts to airlift him for specialized treatment, he succumbed to his injuries.
Sharma was a two-time recipient of gallantry medals and was widely respected for his leadership and bravery in high-risk operations.
