Kolkata, Aug 16: Trinamool Congress leader and former West Bengal Assembly Deputy Speaker Asish Banerjee was found dead inside a party office in Birbhum district on Sunday morning, police said.
Banerjee's body was recovered from a TMC office adjacent to his residence in Rampurhat. Police have launched an investigation and sent the body for a postmortem examination.
A purported note was also recovered from the site. In the note, Banerjee reportedly denied any wrongdoing during his political career and referred to allegations concerning the Tarapith Rampurhat Development Authority (TRDA), where he had served as chairperson.
According to the purported note, Banerjee claimed he had no role in tender-related decisions, cheque issuance, plan approvals or no-objection certificates of the development authority. He also alleged that attempts had been made to malign and humiliate him.
The veteran TMC leader reportedly wrote that he could not always protest alleged wrongdoing within the party and expressed regret over entering politics.

Five-Time MLA From Rampurhat
Banerjee was a former minister and served as a five-time MLA from Rampurhat, representing the constituency from 2001 to 2026.
He lost the seat to Bharatiya Janata Party's Dhruba Saha in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election.
Banerjee had participated in a local Independence Day programme and hoisted the national flag a day before his death, according to reports.
After his electoral defeat, he was not particularly active in politics, party sources cited by PTI said.
The circumstances surrounding his death are yet to be established. Police are investigating the case, including the contents and authenticity of the purported note.
