Woman Suffers Severe Burns After Attempting Self-Immolation Over Relationship Dispute; FIR Filed

Raurkela, Aug 15: A woman allegedly attempted suicide by pouring kerosene over herself in front of her boyfriend's house in Bhatta Basti area under Jhirpani police station limits in Raurkela after an alleged dispute over a marriage promise and money.

She suffered severe burn injuries and was shifted from Raurkela Government Hospital to Ispat Post Graduate Institute and Super Speciality Hospital for treatment.

According to a source, the woman had been in a relationship with Biki Das, a resident of Sector-3, for about two years. Police said the two were in a relationship and Das had promised to marry her.

The incident took place on Friday after the woman learnt that Das had returned to Raurkela and went to meet him at Bhatta Basti. During their interaction, a dispute arose over their relationship, money that she had allegedly given him earlier and the marriage promise, the source informed.

The woman then poured kerosene over herself and attempted su*cide in front of Das.

Subsequently, Das took her to Rourkela Government Hospital for treatment and fled from the hospital afterwards.

Victim Suffers 80-90% Burns
The woman's family subsequently lodged an FIR at Jhirpani police station. Police launched a manhunt for Das, who is absconding.

Police said she suffered burns over 80% to 90% of her body.

A scientific team examined the spot where the incident took place.

Police recorded the woman's statement as part of the investigation.

Police have also detained a woman for questioning in connection with the case.
