New Delhi, Apr 1: The first phase of Census 2027, known as houselisting operations, officially begun today and will continue until September 30. During this period, each state and union territory will conduct the exercise over a specified 30-day window.
Houselisting operations are a crucial preparatory step in the decennial census, laying the foundation for the enumeration of India’s vast population.
It is India's 16th Census and eighth after Independence, and for the first time, self-enumeration will also be available.
Census 2027 will be conducted in two phases - Phase I-House Listing and Housing Census, popularly known as HLO, during six months from April to September 2026, in a period of 30 days, as per the convenience of the State/UT governments, along with the option of Self-enumeration of a 15-day period just before the 30 days of house-to-house listing work.
In this phase, census officials will visit households to collect detailed information about housing conditions, amenities, and assets. The data gathered will help in creating a comprehensive register of households, which will later be used for population enumeration.
Officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs have emphasized that the houselisting phase is vital for ensuring accuracy in the census process. By documenting housing infrastructure, access to basic facilities such as water, electricity, and sanitation, and other socio-economic indicators, the government can better plan welfare schemes and development initiatives.
The census, conducted every ten years, is the largest administrative exercise in the country and plays a pivotal role in shaping policy decisions. Census 2027 is expected to provide updated insights into India’s demographic trends, urbanization patterns, and living standards.
With the houselisting operations now underway, authorities are urging citizens to cooperate with enumerators to ensure the success of this massive national exercise.
