A 20-year-old woman, who is unable to hear and cannot speak, was raped and impregnated by her father, who was arrested after DNA tests confirmed his relationship with the foetus, in a deeply disturbing case from Mumbai's Cuffe Parade neighbourhood, a source said Thursday.
Police arrested the man for the alleged rape of his adult daughter, a case that began when the woman, who has communication disabilities, was discovered to be five months pregnant last September.
The investigation began on September 22, 2025, after the woman was admitted to Mumbai's Cama & Albless Hospital.
According to the source, the woman had complained to her grandmother of stomach discomfort, using gestures to describe a sensation like "insects crawling."

A medical examination revealed the pregnancy. Hospital authorities alerted the police.
The cops initially faced challenges as the woman was unable and unwilling to make a statement, police said. Her father, when questioned, dismissed suggestions of sexual abuse and could not account for the pregnancy. He also refused to file a complaint.
After receiving counselling, the woman agreed to file a formal complaint. Based on her account, police previously arrested a second man and detained a 17-year-old boy, both of whom she identified as assailants. Authorities said the roles of other suspects are still under investigation.
To identify the father of the fetus, forensic officials collected DNA samples from 17 suspects, including the woman's father. A report on January 27 confirmed a single match -- her father.
