New York, Sep 24: External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar held a series of high-level bilateral meetings with foreign ministers from various nations on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session, reinforcing India’s diplomatic outreach and its leadership role in the Global South.
Among the key engagements, Jaishankar met with St. Lucia’s Foreign Minister Alva Baptiste, describing the interaction as “a great conversation” and noting his appreciation for Baptiste’s company.
In a significant dialogue with Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, Jaishankar discussed developments in Europe and the Ukraine conflict, while also reviewing India-EU cooperation under Denmark’s presidency. “Valued his insights,” Jaishankar shared in a post following the meeting.
During the High-Level Meeting of Like-Minded Global South Countries, Jaishankar had a brief exchange with Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, calling it a “quick chat” and reaffirming their friendly ties.
The EAM also met with Netherlands’ Foreign Minister David van Weel, engaging in an “insightful conversation” on European strategic positioning and India’s evolving approach to global affairs.
Furthering India’s commitment to regional partnerships, Jaishankar reiterated India’s “steadfast support” for the development of the Maldives in his meeting with Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel.
In talks with Mauritius Foreign Minister Ritish Ramful, Jaishankar discussed follow-up actions from Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam’s recent state visit to India, emphasizing continuity in bilateral cooperation.
His meeting with Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath focused on reviewing progress in bilateral ties, underscoring India’s sustained engagement with its maritime neighbor.
These diplomatic interactions followed the High-Level Meeting of Like-Minded Global South Countries, which saw participation from 18 nations representing diverse political and economic systems. The forum aligns with India’s broader efforts to amplify the voice of the Global South and foster inclusive multilateralism.
Jaishankar’s engagements reflect India’s proactive diplomacy and its strategic positioning in global affairs, especially amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.
