Mumbai, Oct 26: The Central Railway has officially announced the renaming of Aurangabad railway station to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar railway station. The change was confirmed through an official release issued by the railway authorities.
Its new station code will be `CPSN', the Central Railway said in a release.
The renaming reflects a broader initiative to honour historical figures and regional heritage. All signage, timetables, and official documentation will be updated accordingly.
The move came nearly three years after the then government headed by Eknath Shinde formally renamed Aurangabad city as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

The city, previously named for Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, received the new name as a tribute to Chhatrapati Sambhaji, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and second ruler of the Maratha state.

It was founded in 1610 by Malik Ambar and was renamed in 1995 after the Maratha ruler Sambhaji Maharaj. The city is a significant cultural and economic hub, known for landmarks like the Ajanta and Ellora Caves, which are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
