The summit, running until June 5, is expected to deliver a framework for global disaster risk reduction while showcasing Odisha’s cultural heritage.
Puri, June 3: The coastal city of Puri has turned into a global hub as the BRICS Reduction Working Group’s second thematic meeting commenced today. Delegates from Brazil, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, UAE, and China have arrived to participate in discussions that aim to shape the future of disaster management and resilience building. The summit, hosted in the sacred land of Lord Jagannath, adds spiritual significance to the global gathering, symbolizing unity and protection in times of crisis.

The Odisha government welcomed international representatives at Bhubaneswar airport before they proceeded to Puri, where the sessions will be hosted at the Taj Hotel in Baliapanda. A 24-hour control room has been set up, senior officials have been deployed, and tight security arrangements are in place with eight platoons of force to ensure smooth proceedings.

The conference will deliberate on strengthening international cooperation, sustainable financing for disaster risk reduction, inclusive early warning systems, and nature-based solutions. Delegates will also explore the role of science, technology, and indigenous knowledge in building climate-resilient infrastructure.

On June 4, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will attend the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest. The following days will feature thematic sessions on climate adaptation, multi-hazard early warning systems, and integration of traditional practices with modern technology. Delegates will also visit Konark Sun Temple, Ramachandi for a demonstration of boat rescue operations, and Chilika Lake, highlighting Odisha’s cultural and ecological richness.
