Bhubaneshwar, Sep 25: As the world marks World Lung Day 2025, leading pulmonologists are sounding the alarm on the growing burden of respiratory diseases and urging citizens to take proactive steps to safeguard their lung health.

Dr. Vivek Nangia, Vice Chairman and Head of Pulmonology at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, and Dr. Shiba Kalyan Biswal, Clinical Director of Pulmonology at Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram, highlighted a troubling rise in conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and respiratory infections including tuberculosis and pneumonia. They attribute the surge to worsening air pollution, smoking habits, and lingering complications from COVID-19.

“Early symptoms like persistent cough, breathlessness, and chest tightness are often ignored, leading to delayed diagnosis,” said Dr. Nangia. He emphasized the importance of recognizing these signs and seeking timely medical attention.

Dr. Biswal noted that many post-COVID patients continue to suffer from chronic breathlessness and lung scarring. “Pulmonary rehabilitation and regular follow-ups are essential for managing long-term effects,” he said.

Both experts recommend lifestyle changes to improve lung function. These include practicing breathing exercises such as Anulom Vilom and Kapalbhati, maintaining a diet rich in antioxidants, avoiding smoking, staying physically active, and receiving annual flu and pneumonia vaccinations.

Special attention was also given to children’s lung health. Doctors advised parents to ensure smoke-free environments, limit exposure to polluted air, and encourage outdoor activity when air quality permits.

“Lung health starts early,” Dr. Biswal added. “Building good habits in childhood can prevent chronic diseases later in life.”

As respiratory illnesses continue to rise, experts stress that awareness, prevention, and early intervention remain key to protecting lung health across all age groups.
