Adelaide, Jan 17: Dating may look effortless in the age of swipes and instant matches, but for many, finding the right partner is anything but simple. An Australian make-up artist’s unconventional dating journey has now sparked widespread curiosity online.

Ellen, a professional make-up artist from Adelaide, Australia, dated 416 men over a span of two years before finally meeting her partner, Chris. Her story challenges conventional ideas of romance and highlights how modern dating has evolved in a digital-first world.

At the peak of her search, Ellen went on nearly four dates a week, largely through dating apps. Determined to be transparent from the start, the 5-foot-8 artist clearly mentioned her height on her dating profile so potential matches could decide upfront if they were comfortable with it.

Through hundreds of interactions, Ellen says she gained valuable insights into dating behaviour and relationship dynamics. She noted that many men prioritised physical appearance, with dating app bios frequently mentioning preferences for blue eyes and blonde hair — traits she believes rarely sustain long-term relationships.

Ellen also observed that men who confidently ask women out may not always be genuinely interested, while those who hesitate often care more deeply. She found that people who appear exceptionally kind during the dating phase may reveal very different personalities later, and that striving for “perfection” early on can itself be a warning sign.

According to her, lasting relationships are built on compatibility rather than flawlessness. Ellen believes love is far more practical than its dreamy portrayal online, and the most important factor is not how impressive someone seems — but how a relationship makes you feel.
