Panaji, Dec 9: Nightlife is a huge charm for Goa, given the vibes, music, excitement, freedom and most importantly, 'safety' for tourists. However, the recent tragic incident -- at a club named 'Birch by Romeo Lane' in Goa, where around 25 people, including five tourists and 20 staff members, were killed in a fire on December 6 -- has raised concerns among travellers around the globe.
So, before you enter any nightclub, we have curated some life-saving safety checks that you should always watch out for.
1. Check the Club's Exits Before You Settle In
One of the biggest hazards during fire accidents is blocked or hidden exits.
What to do:
Look for at least 2 clear visible exits.
Make sure that the exits are not locked and blocked.
Avoid sitting or standing in areas that have only one way out.
2. Observe Crowd Density
Overcrowded clubs may become death traps during emergencies.
What to do:
If the club looks packed beyond capacity, leave immediately.
If you feel suffocated or boxed in, then step out immediately.
Stay near the exit of the bar or open spaces.
3. Check or Confirm for Basic Fire Safety Equipment
A responsible and safe club will always have working fire-safety systems.
What should you look for:
Fire extinguishers are placed at visible corners.
Smoke detectors and sprinkler systems.
4. Avoid Clubs that Perform Fireworks Indoors
Fireworks, sparkles and pyrotechnics inside closed spaces are extremely dangerous. If the club is using open flames indoors, consider stepping out.
5. Pay Attention to Burning Smell
Many fires erupt due to faulty wiring or overheated DJ lights.
What to notice:
Exposed wires near speakers or stage areas,
Overloaded plugs or flickering lights
Sparks or burning smell near electrical points. If something feels off, alert the staff or leave.
6. Stay Sober Enough to React
Pace your drinks.
Don’t mix alcohol with unknown substances.
If you feel dizzy or lose awareness, leave the club immediately.
7. Always Inform Someone About Your Location
Before leaving for the night, share the club's name, place and expected time of return to your friends and family.
Enable location sharing on Google Maps with someone you trust.
