Winter Skincare / Is Your Skin Ready For Winter’s Wrath? Discover The Secrets To Stay Protected

Key Points
Don't wait for winter to take a toll.
Find out the ultimate care tips below to prevent this and enjoy a crack-free and stress-free winter.
Bhubaneswar, Nov 15: While all of us get cozy in our beds as the winter season arrives, it is the harshest season for our hands and feet. Cold winds, low humidity, and constant washing can strip away the natural moisture our skin produces, leaving it dry, cracked, itchy, and flaky. During winter, hands and feet suffer the most as they are more exposed. To keep them soft, healthy, and winter‑ready, a simple yet consistent care routine is very important.
Here are some tips to help protect your skin from dryness and damage throughout the season:
Gloves And Socks
The most common yet effective way to protect your hands and feet in winter is
to keep them covered. Wearing soft, breathable gloves protects your hands from
dryness, redness, and flakiness caused by cold winds. Similarly, thick cotton
or woollen socks keep your feet warm, prevent moisture loss, and reduce the
chance of cracked heels. Choosing breathable materials lets skin stay warm but
not sweaty.

Moisturise Twice A Day
Cold weather strips natural oils from the skin. Apply a thick moisturiser with
ingredients like shea butter or glycerine. Applying petroleum jelly on hands in
the morning and before bed also helps in securing the moisture overnight,
giving a smooth and supple skin in the morning.
Use Alcohol- Free Products
Avoid using skincare products that list alcohol among their ingredients, as it
strips the skin’s natural oils, compromises its protective barrier, and may
cause dryness, irritation, and inflammation. Watch for names like Alcohol
Denat, SD Alcohol, Ethanol, Methyl Alcohol, Benzyl Alcohol, and Isopropyl
Alcohol.
Exfoliate Once A Week
Gently scrub
your hands and feet once a week using a mild exfoliator, such as those with
enzymes (papaya, pineapple), a homemade scrub (sugar and honey), or a creamy
formula with fine, smooth particles. This helps remove dead skin and allows
moisturizer to absorb better. Avoid harsh scrubs with large, gritty particles,
as they can irritate the skin and cause micro‑tears.
Cuticle Care
Winters dry out cuticles, making them prone to small wear and tear and hangnails,
so moisturise them daily with cuticle oil or a thick hand cream, and stay
hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Also, avoid aggressive pulling and
cutting of hangnails.
Comfortable Shoes
Invest in comfortable shoes this winter. Choose warm, insulated footwear and
prioritise materials such as soft linings and waterproof fabrics to keep feet
cozy and dry. Wearing uncomfortable shoes can make your feet cold, dry, and
prone to cracking.
