New Delhi, Feb 5: The Washington Post has sacked around 300 employees in a move that the organisation described as “significant restructuring”.
Among the fired employees is Ishaan Tharoor, son of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. Ishaan was working as a foreign affairs columnist at The Washington Post, owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
The renowned media organisation is shutting down its current
sports desk and reducing its global news coverage. A Fox News report suggested
that the move affected about a third of the organisation’s workforce.

Ishaan expressed his heartbreak with a post on his ‘X’ handle on Wednesday. “I have been laid off today from the Washington Post, along with most of the International staff and so many other wonderful colleagues,” he wrote.
“I’m heartbroken for our newsroom and especially for the
peerless journalists who served the Post internationally – editors and
correspondents who have been my friends and collaborators for almost 12 years.
It’s been an honour to work with them,” he added, describing it as “a bad day” and
shared a photograph of an empty newsroom in a separate post.

✨Recalling the launch of ‘WorldView’ column in 2017, Ishaan called it an honour to guide its readers through global affairs expressing gratitude to its nearly half a million subscribers.
Several foreign correspondents and senior journalists also confirmed their exits on social media.
Multiple reports claimed that the Post Reports podcast has been cancelled, Books section has been closed, deeper reductions imposed across Metro and global coverage.
Issuing a statement, The Washington Post Guild, which
represents staff, has urged Bezos to keep investing in the journalistic mission
of the paper. The staff union said, “Without the staff of The Washington Post,
there is no Washington Post.”
