Trump Slams NATO Allies As 'Cowards', Says Alliance Is 'Paper Tiger' Without US
Trump Targets Allies For Refusing To Join Strait Of Hormuz Effort

Key Points

Donald Trump sharply criticised NATO allies as "cowards," calling the alliance a "paper tiger" without the US for refusing to join military efforts against Iran.

Washington, Mar 20: Donald Trump on Friday sharply criticised NATO allies for their lack of support during the US-Israel war against Iran, calling them “cowards.”

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “Without the US, NATO is a paper tiger!” He accused member nations of refusing to join what he described as efforts to stop a “nuclear-powered Iran,” adding that the conflict had now been “militarily won” with minimal risk to them.

Trump Targets Allies Over Strait of Hormuz
Trump has repeatedly called on US allies to help secure shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit point.

The conflict, which began with US-Israeli strikes on Feb. 28, has disrupted global markets, caused widespread casualties and displaced millions.

The US president said NATO countries were unwilling to assist in reopening the strait despite raising concerns over rising oil prices.

“Now that the fight is militarily won, with very little danger for them, they complain about the high oil prices they are forced to pay, but don’t want to help open the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote.

Allies Signal Conditional Support

On Thursday, several countries — including Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan and Canada — said in a joint statement that they would join “appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage through the strait.”

However, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz indicated that participation would depend on an end to active hostilities.

France Rules Out Military Role
French President Emmanuel Macron said after a European Union summit in Brussels that France would not take part in military operations to reopen the waterway under current conditions.

“We are not party to the conflict and, therefore, France will never take part in operations to open or liberate the Strait of Hormuz in the current context,” Macron said.

He added that defending international law and promoting de-escalation remained the priority.
