Donald Trump alleged a possible "mole" within the US government and warned a journalist could face jail time for reporting on a classified military rescue operation in Iran.
Washington, Apr 7: Donald Trump claimed the possibility of a “mole” within the US government and warned of legal action against a journalist over a reported leak linked to a sensitive military rescue operation in Iran.
Trump Flags Internal Leak Threat
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Trump said his administration is working “very hard” to identify the individual responsible for leaking classified information related to the rescue of an American airman whose F-15E fighter jet was shot down over Iran.
He alleged that the leak compromised both the operation and the safety of the officer, who was stranded in hostile territory.
Journalist Faces Jail Warning
In a sharp warning, Trump said the journalist who first reported on the operation could face jail time if they refuse to disclose their source.
“The person who did the story will go to jail if he doesn’t say, and that doesn’t last long,” Trump said.
While he did not name any specific outlet, reports on the incident had appeared in organisations including The New York Times, Fox News, and Axios.

Massive Rescue Operation Detailed
Trump outlined the scale of the operation, stating that around 155 aircraft were deployed, including bombers, fighter jets, refuelling tankers, and rescue aircraft.
He said much of the operation involved strategic deception to mislead Iranian forces about the location of the stranded officer.
“We were bringing them all over and a lot of it was subterfuge… we wanted them to think he was elsewhere,” he said.
Airman Escaped Crash Site Injured
According to Trump, the rescued weapons systems officer was seriously injured but managed to move away from the crash site and contact US forces.
The development comes amid heightened tensions between the US and Iran, with the latest remarks underscoring concerns over operational security and internal information leaks within the American administration.
