Iran Lays Out Sweeping Demands For US Talks: Base Closures, Sanctions End, Strait Of Hormuz Control
Iran's Demands Include US Gulf Base Closure, Lifting Sanctions Amid Indirect Negotiations

Key Points

Iran outlined sweeping demands for renewed talks with the US, including closure of US military bases in the Gulf, financial compensation for wartime damage, and an end to Israel's campaign against Hezbollah.
Tehran, Mar 25: Iran on Wednesday outlined a set of sweeping demands in response to a proposal by Donald Trump for renewed talks, signalling a hard negotiating stance even as indirect engagement between the two sides continues.

According to reports, Tehran indicated that conditions for re-entering ceasefire negotiations remain stringent.

Demands Target US Presence and Sanctions

Iranian representatives called for the closure of US military bases in the Gulf, financial compensation for wartime damage and an end to Israel’s campaign against Hezbollah.

They further sought the lifting of all sanctions as part of any agreement.

In addition, Iran proposed a framework allowing it to collect fees from ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route.

Reports, citing people familiar with the matter, said the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has consolidated influence within Iran’s leadership and is shaping these demands.

Strait of Hormuz Central to Talks
A major condition includes a new arrangement governing the Strait of Hormuz that would effectively place it under Iranian control, along with guarantees that hostilities would not resume.

The waterway carries a significant share of global oil supplies and remains central to the ongoing conflict.

Signals of Possible Flexibility
Despite the firm public position, there are indications that Iran may be signalling limited flexibility in private discussions.

Reports suggest Tehran could consider halting its ballistic missile programme for five years and reducing uranium enrichment levels.

It may also engage in discussions on its stockpile of 60% enriched uranium and allow inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Possible Shift on Regional Proxies
Iran could also consider stopping financial support to regional groups, including Hezbollah, Hamas and Iraqi militias, as part of a broader agreement, according to reports.

These positions are being viewed as potential opening moves in negotiations.

Iran Criticises US Position
Iranian military spokesperson Ebrahim Zolfaqari criticised the US leadership, questioning its approach to negotiations.

“The United States is negotiating with itself,” he said, according to state media.

He also warned that US economic interests would remain under pressure unless Washington accepts Iran’s role in ensuring regional stability.

Uncertain Path Ahead
The combination of firm public demands and reported private flexibility highlights the complexity of the negotiations.

With both sides testing each other’s positions, the prospects for a ceasefire agreement remain uncertain, with implications extending beyond the immediate conflict.
