  • US demands control of Greenland spark European pushback with military presence discussions.
  • Upcoming Washington talks aim to defuse tensions over the strategically vital Arctic island.

New Delhi, Jan 14: Greenland has firmly rejected US President Donald Trump’s renewed threats to annex the Arctic territory, declaring its commitment to remain within the Kingdom of Denmark.

Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, speaking alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Copenhagen, said the island would choose Denmark over the United States if forced to decide.

“We are now facing a geopolitical crisis, and if we have to choose between the United States and Denmark here and now, then we choose Denmark. We choose the Greenland we know today, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark,” Nielsen stated.

His remarks come ahead of a crucial meeting in Washington between Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers and US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance. The talks aim to ease tensions and counter Trump’s aggressive stance toward the strategically vital island.

Trump has insisted that the US must gain control of Greenland, either through economic leverage or military force. Responding to Nielsen’s comments, Trump dismissed the Greenlandic leader, warning it could become “a big problem” for him.

Greenland, home to 57,000 people, has long debated independence from Denmark. However, polls show overwhelming opposition to joining the US. Elections last year reflected this sentiment, with three-quarters of voters backing parties favouring only gradual independence.

Nielsen emphasized unity, saying, “Right now is the time to stand together. Greenland stands within the Kingdom of Denmark and stands fully united in protecting the fundamental principles.”

European allies are also stepping in to counter Trump’s ambitions. The UK and Germany are exploring a military presence in Greenland to reinforce Arctic security. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expressed optimism about reaching a compromise with Washington, while Defence Minister Boris Pistorius stressed that security in the North Atlantic must be achieved “multilaterally and jointly.”

As tensions escalate, Greenland’s stance signals a broader European determination to resist unilateral US moves in the Arctic, highlighting the island’s growing importance in global geopolitics.
