Gen Z Protests Erupt Again In Nepal, Curfew Imposed

Key Points

Tensions escalated on Wednesday in Bara district as simultaneous rallies by Gen Z protesters and CPN-UML party workers in the Simara area led to heated confrontations.
Simara, Nov 20: Nepal witnessed a fresh wave of youth-led unrest on Thursday as self-identified Gen Z protesters returned to the streets of Bara district, reigniting tensions that had simmered since violent clashes earlier this week.

Tensions escalated on Wednesday in Bara district as simultaneous rallies by Gen Z protesters and CPN-UML party workers in the Simara area led to heated confrontations.

The situation quickly deteriorated, with scuffles erupting between the two groups—some occurring dangerously close to Simara Airport—prompting local authorities to impose a curfew to restore order.

As per the district administration, curfew will remain in force until 8 pm (local time) on Thursday, citing the need to restore order.

Nepal's Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, meanwhile, appealed for calm and called on all parties to "refrain from unwanted political provocation" and to trust the democratic process ahead of elections set for March 5, 2026.

"I have directed the Home Administration and security agencies to work with utmost restraint and preparation to maintain peace and order," Karki said in a statement issued late on Wednesday.

She said she wanted to "ensure the safe movement of leaders of all political parties and create a fair and fear-free environment for the elections".

Karki also held a meeting on Wednesday with representatives of more than 110 parties.

The Gen Z movement in Nepal has gained momentum over the past year, fueled by frustrations over political corruption, lack of transparency, and youth disenfranchisement.

Earlier protests in September led to the resignation of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and the appointment of Sushila Karki as interim Prime Minister.

With tensions still high, authorities are monitoring the situation closely. No further injuries have been reported as of Thursday evening, but the possibility of extended curfews or additional security measures remains.
