Artemis II Astronauts Re-Establish Contact After 40-Minute Blackout Behind The Moon

Key Points

Artemis II astronauts re-established contact with NASA after a 40-minute communication blackout as the spacecraft passed behind the Moon.
Houston, Apr 7: Astronauts aboard Artemis II re-established contact with NASA after a 40-minute communication blackout, marking a key moment in the first human lunar flyby mission in over 50 years.

Signal Lost Behind The Moon
Mission control in Houston temporarily lost communication as the spacecraft passed behind the Moon, blocking signals from Earth. Contact was restored after nearly 40 minutes.

“It is so great to hear from Earth again,” said astronaut Christina Koch, expressing relief as communication resumed.

Record-Breaking Journey Beyond Earth
The Artemis II crew surpassed the historic distance record set by Apollo 13, travelling farther from Earth than any human before.

The spacecraft is expected to reach a peak distance of about 252,760 miles (406,778 km), marking a major milestone in modern space exploration.

Astronaut Jeremy Hansen described the achievement as a challenge for future generations to push boundaries even further.

Astronauts Describe Lunar Surface
During the flyby, astronauts shared vivid, real-time observations of the Moon’s surface -- something rarely captured beyond robotic imagery.

Victor Glover described the “terminator” -- the boundary between the Moon’s night and day -- as “the most rugged” he had seen.

Meanwhile, Koch likened lunar craters to “a lampshade with tiny pinprick holes,” highlighting their brightness against the darker surface.

Lead scientist Kelsey Young praised the human perspective, noting that such descriptions bring unique value to scientific understanding.

Historic ‘Firsts’ For Crew
Led by Commander Reid Wiseman, the Artemis II mission includes several historic firsts:

Glover is the first person of colour to orbit the Moon
Koch is the first woman on a lunar flyby mission
Hansen is the first non-American to take part in such a mission

Emotional Tribute On The Moon

In a poignant moment, the crew proposed naming two previously unnamed lunar craters.

One was suggested as “Integrity,” after the spacecraft’s nickname, while another -- “Carroll” -- was proposed in memory of Wiseman’s late wife.

The moment was marked by silence in mission control, underscoring the emotional significance of the journey.

Return Journey Underway
The Orion spacecraft is currently circling the Moon in a “free-return trajectory,” which will bring the crew safely back to Earth over the next four days.

The mission continues to deliver historic milestones, blending scientific discovery with deeply human moments in space exploration.
