Indian Cheese Wins Global Spotlight, PM Modi Hails Dairy Success
Traditional Indian Cheese on World Stage

Key Points

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Mann Ki Baat address, celebrated India’s dairy sector after Indian cheese brands won international awards, noting that traditional varieties like Kalari, Chhurpi, and Topli Nu Paneer are now reaching global markets.
New Delhi, Apr 26: India’s dairy sector is gaining international recognition, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighting the growing global appeal of Indian cheese during his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat. He praised the achievements of two Indian cheese brands that recently won prestigious awards at an international competition in Brazil, calling it a proud moment for the country’s food traditions.

“In our country, food traditions have never been confined merely to taste. Indian cheese is an interesting part of this tradition,” Modi said, noting that the success of Indian cheese abroad reflects the diversity and richness of India’s culinary heritage. He emphasized that value addition and modern technology are helping traditional dairy products meet world standards, opening new opportunities for Indian producers.

The Prime Minister spotlighted several unique varieties of Indian cheese. Among them was Kalari cheese from Jammu and Kashmir, often referred to as the “Mozzarella of Kashmir,” prepared for generations by the Gujjar-Bakarwal community. He also mentioned Chhurpi, a yak milk cheese found in Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Ladakh, which embodies the simplicity of the Himalayan region. Another highlight was Topli Nu Paneer, also known as Surti Cheese, originating from Maharashtra and Gujarat.

“These are just a few examples, but the world of flavours in our country is vast,” Modi remarked. He noted that Indian companies are investing in dairy innovation, improving packaging, and adopting modern techniques to ensure products meet international standards. As a result, Indian cheese is now finding its way into global markets and restaurants, offering consumers worldwide a taste of India’s traditions.

Modi linked this achievement to the broader vision of “local to global,” stressing that Indian cheese demonstrates how traditional products can gain international recognition while preserving cultural identity. “I am confident that India’s taste, tradition, and quality will provide a new experience to people around the world and create a stronger connection with India,” he said.
