When Govinda Was Spotted at Rani’s House: The 2000s Scandal That Never Died

Key Points

  • Govinda and Rani Mukerji’s alleged relationship became one of Bollywood’s most talked-about controversies in the early 2000s.
  • Reports had claimed expensive gifts, public appearances and a late-night visit escalated tension in Govinda’s marriage.

Mumbai, Nov 19: While Govinda’s wife, Sunita Ahuja, is on a juggernaut of podcasts nowadays, laying bare the cracks in their relationship, their past is proof that when it rains, it pours. The yesteryear story of the celebrated actor is no bed of roses, as controversy has long been the uninvited guest at their door.

During the turn of the millennium, Bollywood circulated widespread speculation about off-screen chemistry between superstar Govinda and rising actor Rani Mukerji during their collaboration on the comedy "Hadh Kar Di Aapne" (2000), creating one of the industry's most discussed but never officially acknowledged scandals.

According to entertainment sources, Govinda and Rani struck up a very close companionship during the shoot, which quickly evolved into an alleged romance despite Govinda’s married status. Their increasing public appearances and gifts -- including high-end cars, diamonds, and even a luxurious apartment -- fueled the fire.

As per various reports, the situation escalated to the point where Govinda’s wife, Sunita, reportedly threatened to leave the family home, forcing Govinda to eventually break away from Rani Mukerji.

A defining moment in the scandal came when, as per early 2000s entertainment outlets, Govinda was spotted in a nightdress at Rani Mukerji’s house by a journalist -- an incident that rapidly circulated within media circles before being downplayed by both involved. The nightdress episode became emblematic of the otherwise hushed nature of their relationship.

Though the stars both moved on professionally and personally, the episode remains a widely cited example of how closely Bollywood guards its private dramas, letting only snippets leak into public view.

As per a feature in 'Times of India' and as described by industry insiders, Govinda’s marriage emerged intact after the brief but intense episode, while he and Rani chose not to publicly address the rumors, allowing the story to settle as one of Bollywood’s enduring “unspoken” scandals.
