Netflix Glitch Briefly Disrupts 'Stranger Things' Finale Streaming

Key Points

  • Netflix experienced a brief outage on New Year’s night as viewers logged in to watch the ‘Stranger Things’ finale.
  • The glitch lasted about a minute, similar to a disruption during the season premiere in November.
  • The final season dominated global viewership, drawing 34.5 million views in the last week of December.
New Delhi. Jan 1: Netflix faced a brief outage on New Year's night (January 1, 2026) as viewers across several regions attempted to log in to watch the finale of 'Stranger Things', one of the platform’s most popular original series.

Some users reported difficulty accessing the streaming service around the time the finale premiered. The issue lasted for about a minute and was resolved after refreshing the app or website, according to media reports. Users encountering the problem were shown an error screen featuring an image from Nailed It! with the message: “Something went wrong. Sorry, we’re having trouble with your request. You’ll find lots to explore on the home page,” Variety reported.

Netflix had faced a similar technical disruption during the season five premiere of Stranger Things on November 26, when the service was reportedly down for about five minutes following the release of the first four episodes.

Despite the brief glitch, season five of 'Stranger Things' has continued to dominate viewership charts. The final season was the most-watched title worldwide during the week of December 22–28, drawing 34.5 million views, according to Netflix data. This marked the second-highest weekly total for the season, following its debut week in November, when it recorded 59.6 million views — Netflix’s best-ever opening week for an English-language series.

Created by Matt and Ross Duffer, Stranger Things debuted in 2016 and quickly became a global phenomenon. Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, the series follows a group of young friends who encounter supernatural forces linked to a parallel dimension known as the Upside Down.

The show stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink and several others.

Ahead of the finale’s release, Ross Duffer shared an emotional Instagram post reflecting on the decade-long journey of the series, calling the experience “emotional and cathartic” and thanking fans for their support over the years.
