The 52-year-old icon, whose voice defined generations of music lovers across Assam and beyond, will be cremated with full state honours.

Kamrup, Sep 23: Thousands of mourners gathered at the crematorium in Kamarkuchi NC village, Kamrup district, to witness the final rites of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away in a tragic drowning accident in Singapore on September 19.

The 52-year-old icon, whose voice defined generations of music lovers across Assam and beyond, will be cremated with full state honours.

Zubeen’s mortal remains were earlier placed in a glass casket at Sarusajai Stadium, draped in a traditional Assamese gamosa. His final journey will began from the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who personally inspected the cremation site ahead of the ceremony, paid tribute to Garg, stating, “There will never be another Zubeen.”

The state government declared a three-day mourning period and announced plans to build memorials in his honour at Kamarkuchi and Jorhat, where the singer spent his formative years.

The cremation site, located about 20 km from Guwahati, was closed to private vehicles to ensure smooth proceedings. The highway leading to Jorabat was temporarily shut down, and liquor stores along the route were ordered closed by both Assam and Meghalaya governments as a mark of respect.

Known for his versatility and soulful voice, Zubeen sang in over 40 languages and was affectionately called “Luit Kontho” — the voice of the Brahmaputra.
