Ramayana Teaser: Can Ranbir Kapoor Redefine Mythological Cinema?

Key Points

The teaser of 'Ramayana' starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram was unveiled on Hanuman Jayanti, showcasing grand visuals of Ayodhya, 'Sita Swayamvar', and an opulent Lanka.
Mumbai, Apr 2: The teaser of 'Ramayana', starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, was unveiled on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti, offering audiences their first glimpse into one of the most ambitious mythological adaptations in Indian cinema.

Global Scale Vision After Years of Development
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra, the film is planned as a two-part saga, with Part 1 scheduled for a Diwali 2026 release. The teaser had earlier been showcased at IMAX screenings in Los Angeles and New York, underlining the makers’ global ambitions.

The project, backed by VFX studio DNEG, aims to position itself alongside large-scale international fantasy epics, with a strong focus on world-building, visual depth and cinematic spectacle.

Visual Grandeur Stands out, from Ayodhya to 'Sita Swayamvar'
The Ramayana teaser highlights a rich visual palette, particularly in its depiction of Ayodhya, presented through vibrant and colourful frames. The Sita Swayamvar sequence emerges as one of the standout moments, appearing grand and meticulously designed.

A majestic frame of Lord Ram has drawn attention for its composed and divine visual tone, while casting choices like Arun Govil as Dasharath have been noted as fitting.

The portrayal of Lanka marks a notable shift from recent interpretations, depicting it as a luxurious and opulent city, closer to descriptions found in Valmiki’s Ramayana, rather than a dark, dungeon-like setting shown in Om Raut's 'Adipurush'.

Mixed Technical Response Despite Strong First Impression
While the Ramayana teaser has been widely appreciated for its scale and ambition, some technical aspects have drawn criticism. Slow-motion shots appear slightly choppy, and certain sequences feel jumpy, possibly due to frame rate inconsistencies.

The Ramayana teaser’s visualisation of creatures and monsters has reminded some viewers of 'The Lord of the Rings'-style fantasy treatment, further reinforcing its global cinematic influence.

The ensemble cast includes Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman. The music is composed by Hans Zimmer and AR Rahman.

Despite mixed early reactions on technical finesse, the teaser has generated significant buzz, setting the stage for what is being positioned as a landmark retelling of the ancient epic on a global scale.
