Bhubaneswar, Apr 4: Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and other prominent leaders on Friday condoled the demise of veteran actor-filmmaker Manoj Kumar, who passed away in Mumbai at the age of 87 this morning.

In a social media post, the Governor said, “Hon’ble Governor Shri @DrHariBabuK is saddened to learn of the passing of legendary hindi film actor, #ManojKumar. His vast contribution to Indian cinema, his iconic performances & powerful portrayals of patriotism will forever remain etched in the hearts of his fans.”


In his message on X, CM Majhi said, “Deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary actor #ManojKumar. His contributions to Indian cinema, especially in inspiring patriotism will always be cherished by his fans as ‘Bharat Kumar’. My heartfelt condolences to his family & fans. May his soul rest in peace.”


Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition, Naveen Patnaik expressed sadness at the demise of legendary actor Manoj Kumar.

“Deeply saddened to learn about passing away of iconic actor Padma Shri and Dadasaheb Phalke Awardee #ManojKumar. He was a prolific entertainer and many of his roles evoked deep patriotic fervour. Veteran actor and director Manoj Kumar died of age-related issues at the Kokilaben Ambani Hospital in Mumbai at around 3.30 AM. He was 87. The industry veteran, whose films ruled the box office in the late 1960s and 1970s, had been ailing for a while.


The legendary Bollywood actor was well-known by his nickname ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his patriotic films. He was a recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri and Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his immense contribution to Indian cinema for decades.


Born as Harikrishna Giri Goswami, Kumar has shaped the narrative of patriotic movies in Bollywood and has delivered classics like Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), and Kranti (1981).


Kumar’s on-screen persona as a patriotic hero earned him the moniker ‘Bharat Kumar.’ His unforgettable performances and charismatic on-screen presence left an indelible mark. Some of his other popular films are Patthar Ke Sanam, Shor, Sanyasi, and Roti Kapda Aur Makan.
