Key Points

Hema Malini accepted the Padma Vibhushan on behalf of her late husband Dharmendra at Rashtrapati Bhavan, marking an emotional tribute to the Bollywood legend’s enduring legacy.
Mumbai, May 25: Veteran actress and parliamentarian Hema Malini experienced a deeply emotional moment as she accepted the Padma Vibhushan on behalf of her late husband, legendary actor Dharmendra, at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. The award, India’s second-highest civilian honour, was conferred posthumously by President Droupadi Murmu during the prestigious Padma Awards ceremony.

Dharmendra, fondly remembered as the “He-Man of Bollywood,” passed away in November last year at the age of 89. He had been battling respiratory complications and was reportedly placed on a ventilator in his final days. His demise marked the end of an era for Hindi cinema, leaving behind a legacy of timeless performances across genres ranging from romance and drama to action and comedy.

Born in 1935 in Punjab, Dharmendra’s journey to stardom was nothing short of extraordinary. His entry into films was facilitated by a Filmfare talent hunt in 1958, where his striking looks and natural charisma won him recognition. This breakthrough opened the doors to the film industry, eventually making him one of Bollywood’s most enduring stars. Interestingly, the same contest would later discover another superstar, Rajesh Khanna, cementing its place in cinematic history.

Over the decades, Dharmendra starred in iconic films such as Phool Aur Patthar, Sholay, Chupke Chupke, and Yaadon Ki Baaraat, earning admiration for his versatility and screen presence. His on-screen chemistry with Hema Malini became legendary, and their partnership extended beyond cinema into real life, making them one of Bollywood’s most celebrated couples.

At the ceremony, Hema Malini, herself a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, maintained composure despite the overwhelming emotions. Observers noted her dignified presence as she fought back tears while receiving the honour, symbolizing both personal grief and national pride.

The event also celebrated other stalwarts of Indian art and culture. Bengali cinema veteran Prosenjit Chatterjee was conferred the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, for his remarkable contributions to cinema. Dressed in an elegant kurta, Chatterjee’s presence highlighted the diversity and richness of Indian film heritage.

The Padma Awards, held annually at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, continue to recognize individuals whose contributions have shaped India’s cultural, social, and artistic landscape. Dharmendra’s posthumous honour stands as a testament to his unparalleled impact on Indian cinema and the hearts of millions of fans.
