Haiwaan September 11 Date: Akshay-Saif Face-Off Sparks Buzz; YT Views Not A Blast!
Mass Spectacle or True Cult Noir?

Key Points

A Dark Departure: The trailer shifts completely away from director Priyadarshan’s signature comic territory into a tense, atmospheric psychological cat-and-mouse thriller.
Respectable Niche Numbers: While its 6.4M opening-day views sit below massive commercial action blockbusters, the trailer has steadily climbed past 23 million cumulative views due to strong audience curiosity.
Fan-Favorite Transformations: Social media is highly hooked on Akshay Kumar's terrifying, ruthless antagonist avatar and his long-awaited reunion with Saif Ali Kha

Bhubaneswar: With iconic director Priyadarshan's Haiwaan set date on theatrical screens has been Sept 11, all eyes are now on how the jugalbandi of iconic director and the Main Anari Tu Khiladi stars are poised to lit the silver screen on fire.
A glance at the trailer tale of Haiwaan, Priyadarshan’s upcoming psychological thriller starring Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan, has, however, triggered a strong social-media response, with fans largely impressed by its dark mood, intense performances and the unusual pairing of the two actors.

Released on August 25, the trailer moves away from the comic territory associated with Priyadarshan and instead builds a tense cat-and-mouse thriller around Saif’s visually impaired character and Akshay’s menacing antagonist. The film, based on Priyadarshan’s 2016 Malayalam thriller Oppam, also stars Boman Irani, Saiyami Kher and Shriya Pilgaonkar.

A Blast on You Tube?

The YouTube numbers are important because they put the trailer response in perspective: Haiwaan has generated substantial curiosity, but its opening-day digital pull is nowhere near the mega-trailer numbers of Priyadarshan-linked or Akshay-led commercial spectacles.

The more meaningful benchmark is Priyadarshan's recent Akshay collaboration, Bhooth Bangla. Its promotional campaign generated dramatically stronger online numbers, with reports putting its trailer/teaser traction in the 50-million-plus range.

What the numbers say about Haiwaan

The 6.4 million first-24-hour views suggest that Haiwaan did not arrive as a YouTube blockbuster despite the Akshay Kumar-Saif Ali Khan reunion. By comparison, recent Bollywood trailers have operated on a completely different scale: Sky Force recorded 57.7 million first-day YouTube views, while Dunki registered 58.5 million.

But Haiwaan is a different proposition. It is a dark crime thriller rather than a franchise comedy, spectacle or mass-action film.

Its trailer's strength appears to be viewer curiosity and discussion rather than record-breaking consumption. The 23-million-plus cumulative figure nevertheless shows that the trailer has continued to attract viewers after its initial release.

The Key Takeaway: Haiwaan has not set YouTube on fire like a major commercial tentpole, but its digital trajectory is respectable for a non-franchise thriller.

The real question now is whether the positive discussion around Akshay's menacing turn, Saif's performance and Priyadarshan's return to serious cinema can convert into theatrical word-of-mouth.

Fans Hooked By Akshay’s Dark Turn

The strongest reaction has been around Akshay Kumar’s transformation into a ruthless, unpredictable character. Fans on X described the trailer as “chilling”, “intense” and “absolutely terrifying”, while several praised the actor for stepping away from his familiar heroic image.

The Akshay-Saif reunion has emerged as another major attraction. Their return to the screen together after a long gap has generated nostalgia among viewers who remember their earlier collaborations, with fans welcoming what they see as a more mature and serious face-off.

Cinephile Interest, But One Question

Among film followers, the trailer has generated curiosity because Priyadarshan appears to be returning to the serious thriller territory that marked parts of his earlier career. The filmmaker has himself spoken about wanting to move back towards serious cinema, making Haiwaan a notable departure from his better-known comedy films.

Yet the response has not been uniformly positive. Some viewers questioned the need for another remake when the original Oppam is already widely available, while others felt the trailer was too dependent on atmosphere and star power. (

With Haiwaan scheduled to hit theatres on September 11, the trailer has clearly succeeded in creating curiosity. The bigger test, however, will be whether Priyadarshan can turn the familiar remake material into a thriller capable of standing on its own—and whether Akshay’s darker avatar delivers beyond the trailer.
