Mumbai, Oct 21: The Indian film industry is grieving the loss of veteran actor-comedian Govardhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, who passed away on October 20 at the age of 84 due to a chest infection. His last rites were performed at Santacruz Crematorium on Monday, in accordance with his wish for a quiet farewell.
Asrani’s passing has left a void in Bollywood, with tributes pouring in from across the industry. Akshay Kumar, who shared screen space with Asrani in cult classics like Hera Pheri, Bhagam Bhag, and De Dana Dan, expressed his sorrow on Instagram. “Speechless with grief… Bahot pyare insaan the… he had the most legendary comic timing,” Akshay wrote, recalling their recent meeting on the sets of Haiwaan. He also mentioned their upcoming unreleased projects Bhoot Bangla and Haiwaan, calling Asrani’s death “an absolute loss to our industry.”

actor Anupam Kher shared a heartfelt video tribute, remembering Asrani not just
as a comic genius but also as a generous soul and a respected teacher at FTII.
“We will miss you in physical form, but cinema and your ability to make people
laugh will keep you alive for years to come,” he wrote. Kher reminisced about
their many collaborations and Asrani’s energetic presence, both on set and
during morning walks on Juhu Beach.

✨Actor Boman Irani, who recently worked with Asrani, recalled the veteran’s unwavering passion for acting. “The magical word ‘action’ had another meaning for him,” Irani wrote, describing how Asrani, despite needing assistance off camera, transformed into a live wire once the camera rolled. “There was a current of energy that kept him happy and alive, joyful and excited, no matter his age and condition.”
Just hours before his passing, Asrani had posted Diwali wishes to his fans, a testament to his enduring spirit. His official Instagram account shared a tribute, calling him “the king of comedy” who gave Indian cinema “a new identity with his unique acting, simplicity, and humour.”
Asrani’s legacy spans over 350 films across Hindi and Gujarati cinema, with his iconic role as the eccentric jailer in Sholay etched in cinematic history. His passing marks the end of an era, but the laughter he brought to millions will echo for generations.
