As Beautiful Bengali Actress Nusrat Jahan Turns a Year Older, Her Headlines Refuse to Fade
Nusrat Jahan

Key Points

Bengali actress and former Trinamool Congress MP Nusrat Jahan turns 36, balancing a successful film career with active politics.

She entered films in 2011, won Basirhat Lok Sabha seat in 2019, and has focused on women’s empowerment and development.

Her personal life, including relationships and a civil court ruling on marriage validity, has drawn public attention.
Kolkata, Jan 8: Nusrat Jahan Ruhi -- born 8 January 1990 -- is one of Bengal’s most recognisable actresses, balancing high-profile film roles with active participation in electoral politics.

Born and raised in Kolkata in a Bengali Muslim family, Nusrat completed her schooling at Our Lady Queen of the Missions School and earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Bhawanipur College.

Her entry into the public eye began in 2010 when she won the Fair One Miss Kolkata beauty contest, opening doors into modelling and eventually film.

Film Career
Nusrat made her cinematic debut in 2011 with 'Shotru', directed by Raj Chakraborty and starring alongside Jeet, quickly positioning herself as a leading face in Bengali cinema.

In subsequent years she appeared in several commercially successful films including 'Khoka 420' (2013), 'Khiladi' (2013), 'Crisscross' (2018) and 'Swastik Sanket' (2022).

Her performances across genres — from thrillers to dramas — coupled with her onscreen charisma, made her a bankable star in Tollywood.

Nusrat also participated in popular projects like 'SOS Kolkata' (2020), co-starring with actors such as Yash Dasgupta and Mimi Chakraborty.

Political Career
In March 2019, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced Nusrat as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate from the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency ahead of that year’s general election.

Riding on her popularity and TMC’s organisational strength, she won the seat by a significant margin and became a Member of Parliament in the 17th Lok Sabha.

Nusrat’s political platform has focused on regional development, women’s empowerment and youth engagement, leveraging her celebrity status to connect with voters.

Relationships and Controversies
Nusrat’s personal life has been subject to intense media scrutiny and debate.

Nusrat Jahan faced public attention in 2012 after it emerged that she had been in a past relationship with Kader Khan, one of the accused in Kolkata’s Park Street gang-rape case.

Media reports said police questioned her while searching for Khan, who had gone absconding after the incident. Nusrat later clarified that the relationship pre-dated the crime and asserted that she had no knowledge of the allegations at the time. Importantly, she was never named in the chargesheet nor faced any legal proceedings

In June 2019, she married Kolkata-based businessman Nikhil Jain in a ceremony held in Bodrum, Turkey, followed by a high-profile reception in Kolkata attended by political dignitaries.
However, the legality and validity of this union became contentious.

By 2021, Nusrat publicly stated that the marriage was not valid under Indian law, explaining that the Turkish ceremony — an inter-faith marriage — was not registered under India’s Special Marriage Act, meaning it held no legal sanctity domestically.

Her estranged husband contested some of these claims, saying he had sought registration and that they had lived publicly as husband and wife.

In late 2023, an Alipore civil court formally ruled the marriage “not legally valid” under Indian law, reinforcing Nusrat’s position.

Around the time of the marital discord, Nusrat developed a close relationship with fellow actor-politician Yash Dasgupta, her co-star in SOS Kolkata. The couple has publicly shared moments together, and in August 2021, Nusrat gave birth to a son, Yishaan, whose birth certificate lists Dasgupta as father.

The unfolding of personal developments against a backdrop of political debate has occasionally drawn criticism from opponents who questioned Nusrat’s public disclosures and political conduct.

The Road Ahead
At 36, Nusrat Jahan continues to juggle her cinematic legacy with her role in public service. From blockbuster films to parliamentary sessions, and from marital debates to new beginnings with Yash Dasgupta, her journey remains one of the most closely followed in Bengal’s cultural and political spheres.
