Alpha Poster Sparks Dune Comparisons: Is Bollywood Borrowing Hollywood’s Desert Epic Style?

Key Points

The promotional poster of Alpha starring Alia Bhatt and others has gone viral, with fans noting strong visual similarities to Dune due to its desert-toned, cinematic aesthetic. The discussion has fueled online debate about visual inspiration in modern filmmaking.
Mumbai, June 12: The latest promotional poster of YRF’s much-anticipated spy thriller, 'Alpha', featuring Alia Bhatt, Sharvari, Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor, has become a hot topic on social media in no time. The YRF Spy Universe is expanding and the film is taking the lead. The recently released poster has also been a topic of much discussion on the internet for its visual similarities with the Hollywood sci-fi epic Dune.

The poster shows the ensemble cast in a gritty intense setting with a sepia-toned muted colour palette. The desert-like setting emphasizes a gritty, atmospheric tone and hints at the high-stakes story of the film. The characters are treated in a cinematic, almost dystopian manner, aiming at seriousness, scale and tension.

However, it was this very look that caught the attention of viewers. Many felt it echoed the visual style of 'Dune', the acclaimed film starring Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, and Zendaya.

Soon after the poster was revealed, users on social media began pointing out similarities between the visual styles of the two films. Several netizens described the 'Alpha' poster as “Dune-coded,” noting similarities in composition, lighting, and overall mood.

Some reactions suggested that the poster could easily be mistaken for a continuation or spin-off of the sci-fi franchise. One user remarked that it looked like a “Dune 3 poster,” while another joked that a simple AI prompt inspired by *Dune* could have produced a similar look. Others shared similar views, with comments emphasizing how the imagery reminded them of 'Dune' at first glance.

Similarities also emerged in various Reddit threads, where many mentioned how there were similarities in the movie-like aesthetic used by both parties. The common reaction from those commenting was that the similarities were the very first things that came to their minds after looking at the poster.

The discussion concerning the film 'Alpha' was not only based on the poster but extended to the newly released trailer of the movie. Though there were praises concerning the action scenes and the huge magnitude of the production, one scene in particular made many viewers compare the film to the classic French thriller 'La Femme Nikita', because of its similarity in theme and mood, as it portrayed an individual turning into an assassin.

This sparked more debate on how contemporary movies reference other films.

Directed by Shiv Rawail, 'Alpha' is the latest addition to the growing collection of films under the YRF Spy Universe franchise. The protagonist in this movie will be played by actress Alia Bhatt, with other actors in key roles including Sharvari Wagh, Bobby Deol, and Anil Kapoor. According to sources, the plot revolves around Sita, played by Alia Bhatt, an assassin-in-training whose training is done by her father, played by Bobby Deol.

'Alpha' is anticipated to continue the trend of combining intense action scenes and visually captivating storylines in order to create a bigger franchise. It is set for a theatrical release on July 3.

The online discussion on the visuals of 'Alpha', on the other hand, continues to increase the hype surrounding the film.
