SAMS Odisha +2 Second Selection 2026: Half of Slide-Up Aspirants Upgrade to Better Colleges; Girls Continue to Dominate Admissions | Exclusive Analysis

Bhubaneswar: Odisha's centralized Plus-II admission system has once again demonstrated why the State's digital admission architecture is increasingly being seen as one of the country's most efficient school enrolment models.

If the first merit list of Academic Year (AY) 2026-27 rewrote records by allotting seats to over 93% of applicants in one go, the Phase-I Second Selection has now transformed into a story of student mobility rather than mere seat allocation.

The latest figures released by the Student Academic Management System (SAMS) reveal that while 46,570 candidates secured seats in the second selection, the bigger story lies elsewhere: more than half of those selected were not fresh entrants but students successfully upgraded to higher-preference institutions through the Slide-Up mechanism.

The numbers indicate that Odisha's admission process has moved beyond simply filling seats – it is now increasingly helping students secure institutions they actually aspire to study in.

From Mass Allocation to Smart Optimisation

The admission cycle began with a historic 4,61,325 applications, the highest in nearly a decade.

The first merit list itself absorbed 4,29,219 students (93.04%), leaving only a limited pool for the second phase.

Among the 87,549 applicants considered during the second selection, the system selected 46,570 students, translating into a healthy 53.19% conversion rate. After accommodating slide-ups and fresh admissions, only 15,569 candidates now remain outside the allocation net, setting the stage for the upcoming Spot Admission phase.

Unlike previous years, the second selection was less about clearing backlog and more about fine-tuning student preferences.

Slide-Up Emerges as the Biggest Success Story

The most striking statistic emerging from the second selection is the effectiveness of the Slide-Up facility.

Out of 51,284 students who sought admission to institutions higher on their preference list,

• 25,874 students successfully upgraded
• 25,410 could not be accommodated

This means the system recorded an impressive 50.45% slide-up success rate, indicating that one out of every two students seeking a better college secured one.

In fact, 55.56% of all second-round selections comprised Slide-Up candidates, while 20,696 candidates (44.44%) received fresh allotments.

The figures underline a significant shift in Odisha's admission ecosystem – from filling vacant seats to improving admission satisfaction.

Dream College Strategy Paying Off

The Slide-Up success is closely linked to another landmark achievement recorded in the first merit list.

Nearly 2.97 lakh students (69.3%) had already secured admission into their first-choice institution, the highest "dream college" satisfaction rate recorded under SAMS.

Consequently, the second selection witnessed comparatively fewer large-scale reshuffling exercises than seen in previous admission cycles.

Institutional experts say this reflects improving awareness among students while filling online preferences, combined with greater predictability in cut-offs generated through years of digital admissions.

Girls Continue Their Structural Lead

The second selection has also reinforced a demographic trend that has now become structural rather than incidental.

Of the 46,570 candidates selected,

• 24,212 were girls
• 22,357 were boys
• One transgender candidate secured admission.

Girls thus accounted for over 52% of second-round admissions, continuing the advantage already established during the first merit list.

Earlier, girls had secured 2,28,675 seats in the first selection against 2,00,493 for boys, creating a lead exceeding 28,000 admissions.

Education experts attribute this sustained advantage to consistently higher matriculation performance, better retention of girl students in secondary education, expansion of hostel infrastructure and the transparent merit-based digital allocation system.

Arts Continues to Dominate Odisha's Higher Secondary Landscape

The latest selection once again highlights the overwhelming popularity of the Arts stream.

Among students selected during the second round,

• Arts: 32,782 students (70.4%)
• Science: 11,297 students (24.3%)
• Commerce: 2,083 students (4.5%)
• Vocational: 261 students
• Sanskrit: 147 students

Together, Vocational and Sanskrit accounted for less than one percent of total selections, underscoring the continued concentration of student demand in conventional academic streams.

Ravenshaw Retains Its Academic Crown

The second selection also confirms that Odisha's premier higher secondary institutions remain fiercely competitive.

Science

Ravenshaw Higher Secondary School, Cuttack retained the highest cut-off in the State at 90%, followed by

• BJB Higher Secondary School, Bhubaneswar – 84.83%
• Upendra Nath Higher Secondary School, Soro – 84.67%

Commerce

Ravenshaw again topped with 78.20%, ahead of

• Government Higher Secondary School, Rourkela – 77.20%
• BJB Higher Secondary School – 67.60%

Arts

Ravenshaw maintained the State's highest Arts cut-off at 78%, followed by

• Government Higher Secondary School, Rourkela – 75.60%
• Government Higher Secondary School, Bhawanipatna – 75.17%

The data confirms that Ravenshaw continues to command unmatched statewide demand across all major streams.

Capital Witnesses Greater Mobility

One noteworthy trend emerging from the second selection is the relatively sharper easing in cut-offs at BJB Higher Secondary School compared with Ravenshaw.

The Science cut-off at BJB settled at 84.83%, substantially below Ravenshaw's 90%, while Commerce fell to 67.60%.

Admission analysts believe this reflects extensive utilisation of the Slide-Up facility, allowing many candidates initially allotted BJB to migrate to even higher-preference institutions, thereby creating opportunities for students with comparatively lower marks.

Spot Admission Expected to Be Smooth

With over 93% of applicants accommodated in the first list and another 46,570 students selected during the second round, officials expect the forthcoming Spot Admission phase to function largely as a vacancy-filling exercise rather than a major admission round.

Most premier institutions are expected to have negligible vacancies, while any remaining seats are likely to be concentrated in the Arts stream across rural and semi-urban higher secondary schools.

The overall picture emerging from the first two rounds is unmistakable: Odisha's digital admission system is steadily evolving from a seat-allocation platform into a precision-driven preference matching system.

The strong first-choice satisfaction rate, efficient Slide-Up processing and declining admission friction suggest that the State's Plus-II admission architecture has entered a new phase of maturity, where the emphasis is no longer just on securing a seat, but on helping students secure the right seat.
