Debagada, Sep 17: A shocking and brutal murder has rocked Riamal in Debagada district, where a young man was allegedly beaten and then set ablaze by his girlfriend’s family late Wednesday night.

The victim has been identified as Silu Ray of Babrakot village. According to reports, Silu had gone to meet his girlfriend at her residence near Lakshmi Chhak in Riamal when her family confronted him.

Allegations suggest that he was first thrashed mercilessly, leaving him bloodied, before petrol was poured on him and he was set on fire.

Locals, noticing the flames, alerted the fire brigade, but by the time the blaze was controlled, Silu had succumbed to his injuries.

Police rushed to the spot and detained three people — the girlfriend, her father, and mother — for questioning. A scientific team has also been called in to assist with the investigation.

Sources indicate that Silu was a habitual drinker and often created disturbances at his girlfriend’s house, leading to repeated disputes with her family. This ongoing tension is believed to have culminated in the horrific incident.

Police officials confirmed that the investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events and the role of each accused. The case has sent shockwaves across the district, with residents describing it as one of the most gruesome crimes in recent memory.
