Bhubaneswar, Aug 17: Odisha Vigilance today apprehended Dr Satyajit Behera, Assistant Surgeon at Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar, while accepting a bribe of ₹30,000 from a functionary of an NGO engaged in assisting destitute patients.

According to officials, the NGO had been hired by Capital Hospital to help unknown and destitute patients arriving at the casualty ward.

For the employees of the NGO to receive their pending salaries for June and July 2026, Dr Behera’s signature on their work certificate was required. Despite repeated requests since June, the doctor allegedly demanded ₹30,000 to sign the certificate.

Faced with harassment and the bribe demand, the complainant approached Vigilance authorities. Acting swiftly, a team of Odisha Vigilance laid a trap and caught Dr Behera red-handed while accepting the bribe. The tainted money was recovered and seized from his possession.

Following the arrest, simultaneous searches are being conducted at three locations linked to Dr Behera to investigate disproportionate assets.

A case has been registered at Bhubaneswar Vigilance Police Station under Case No. 19 dated 16.08.2026, Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. Investigation is currently underway against the accused.

Officials emphasized that the Vigilance Department remains committed to cracking down on corruption in public services.

Earlier, Odisha Vigilance had secured the conviction of Tarini Charan Das, former Section Officer of the Allotment Section, Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA), in a bribery case.

Das, who had retired from service, was chargesheeted under Section 13(2) read with 13(1)(d) and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

The case pertained to his demand and acceptance of a bribe of ₹5,000 from an applicant seeking transfer of ownership of a house.
