Bhubaneswar, May 5: Odisha has witnessed a series of disturbing incidents involving women, highlighting issues of domestic strife, love affairs, and alleged dowry harassment.

In Bhadrak district, a married woman attempted suicide by setting herself ablaze in front of her father. Identified as Pratima Sahoo of Padhua village under Basudevpur police limits, she had earlier separated from her husband due to marital disputes, with the case pending in court.

After returning to her village, she developed a relationship with another youth. Following a heated argument, she poured kerosene on herself and lit a fire in her father’s presence.

She was rushed to Basudevpur hospital and later shifted to the district headquarters hospital in critical condition, with doctors confirming 60 per cent burn injuries.

Meanwhile, in Ganjam’s Hinjili police limits, a gruesome murder shocked locals. A pregnant woman, identified as Pooja Swain, was allegedly killed by the brother of her lover, Chintu Goud.

Reports suggest she had been staging a protest outside her lover’s house demanding justice. The accused attacked her fatally with a weapon.

Police have detained the suspect and begun investigation. The victim leaves behind a three-year-old daughter.

Another tragic case emerged from Digapahandi block’s Lanjia village in Ganjam district. A young bride, Sujanti Goud, was allegedly beaten to death by her in-laws, including her husband, father-in-law, and mother-in-law.

Her family accused them of dowry harassment and physical torture, claiming the murder was disguised as suicide.

According to our sources, the victim had been married for seven years. Her mother lodged a complaint at the local police station, prompting investigation into the shocking allegations.
