Bhubaneswar, Oct 3: In a major development in the Nayapally rape case, the accused was injured in a police encounter on Saturday, a source said.

According to the source, police opened fire during the encounter, with the accused sustaining injuries after being hit by two rounds of bullets. He was subsequently shifted to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar for treatment.

Women's Commission Had Reviewed Probe
The development comes a day after Odisha State Commission for Women member Urmila Mohapatra visited Nayapally police station and reviewed the investigation into the alleged rape of a 26-year-old woman.

Mohapatra discussed the progress of the investigation with the IIC and the zone ACP before meeting the survivor.

The Women's Commission had expressed concern over the progress of the investigation and directed the Bhubaneswar DCP to submit a report within 15 days.

Survivor Alleged Rape At Gunpoint
The 26-year-old woman had approached Nayapally police station on Thursday and alleged that an unidentified person entered her rented apartment in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday night and raped her.

According to her complaint, she alleged that the assault took place at gunpoint.

The woman reportedly lives in the rented apartment with her elder sister, while the property owners reside on the first floor.

Following the complaint, police registered an FIR and senior officers visited the spot. A forensic team also examined the scene as part of the investigation.

Further details about the alleged encounter are awaited from the police.
