Odisha Crime News / Minor Boy Arrested for Allegedly Attempting to Rape 5-Year-Old in Mayurbhanj District

Baripada/Anugola, Jul 24: Mayurbhanj Police arrested a minor boy for allegedly attempting to rape a five-year-old girl.

The incident took place on July 20 when the child was at an Anganwadi centre in her village. The accused, also a minor from the same village, allegedly lured her to his home by promising chocolate, police said.

Once the child was alone, the accused attempted to sexually assault her, according to the complaint.

The girl disclosed the incident to her mother after returning home. The woman informed her husband and village elders before filing a written complaint with Bisoi police station, authorities said.

Police registered a case and began an investigation. The minor accused was arrested and produced before a court on July 23, officials confirmed.

In a separate incident, a fast-track special court in Anugola district sentenced four men to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the gangrape of a 21-year-old woman and a minor girl.

The Additional District and Sessions Judge (Fast Track Special Court) convicted all four accused under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), imposing a fine on each as well, authorities said.

According to case details, the victims -- a 21-year-old woman and a minor girl -- were forcibly made to consume alcohol before being gangraped in the Anugola area on August 6, 2024.

Following a complaint, police arrested the accused, identified as Jitu Sahu, Hrudaya Chandra Pradhan, Asit Kumar Sahu, and Deepu alias Dibyaranjan Amanta, police informed.

The investigation was conducted under the direct supervision of Angola Superintendent of Police Rahul Jain, with Sub-Inspector Sanghamitra Satapathy leading the probe. A chargesheet was filed within just 59 days of the case being registered, police said.

"This verdict reaffirms Odisha Police's zero-tolerance policy towards heinous crimes against women and children," police said in a statement, adding that the swift conviction was made possible through scientific, victim-centric, and evidence-based investigation.
